Deputy Chief Boyd was born in Chicago and grew up in the Morgan Park neighborhood. Dion graduated from Carver Area High School, now the Carver Military Academy, and Western Illinois University. He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Xavier University.
Dion joined the Chicago Police Department on July 30, 1990, where he was loved and respected throughout his career. Even keeled and with a notably pleasant demeanor, he received numerous awards including 12 honorable mentions over his time with CPD, more than 63% of other police officers. Two weeks before his death, he was sworn in as deputy chief of criminal networks.
Dion leaves behind two sons; Dion, 26, and Darien, 24. He was extremely proud of his sons and all their accomplishments! Watching and coaching them play basketball in their youth was one of his favorite pastimes. In addition to being a role model for his sons, he was a mentor to many in his community. He loved sports, movies, music and playing pool.
Deputy Chief Boyd lived a life of love and respect and will be forever missed by those who were lucky enough to know him.
