SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Walk - Dallas\, TX
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, more law enforcement officers die by suicide than are feloniously killed in the line of duty. At Blue H.E.L.P.\, we are trying to reduce the stigma surrounding emotional health for law enforcement\, acknowledge the service and sacrifice of those we lost to suicide\, bring awareness to issue and assist families in the aftermath. Proceeds of this walk will fund care packages for families and departments after a suicide\, grief camps\, training and other costs associated with awareness and prevention. \nWe believe that officers who suffer emotional injuries should be recognized and their service to the community honored. We believe it’s time to put names and faces to the men and women who have died because their emotional injuries became too much to bear. We believe it’s time to support the families who have lost loved ones to those injuries. We believe in the saying\, “It is not how they died that mattered\, it is how they lived”. \nWalk Details\nWalk Date: 09/25/2021\nWalk Location: Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge – 108 Continental Avenue\, Dallas\, TX 75207\nCheck-in/Registration Time: 8:00 am\nWalk Begins: 9:00 am Walk Ends: 3:00 pm\nContact: Journey@bluehelp.org\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:25th Annual Crisis Intervention Conference
DESCRIPTION:Session 17 – Law Enforcement Suicide\nPresenters: Karen Solomon\, Co-Founder\, Blue H.E.L.P.\, ShaRonda Young Calderon\, B.S\, Criminal Justice\, Dallas\, TX\, and Amanda Rae Button\, Wife and Survivor \nLaw enforcement suicide has become a national issue garnering media attention and improved wellness programs. Blue H.E.L.P. has been collecting LE suicide data since January 1\, 2016 and has found that the greatest barrier to seeking help is still fear of the stigma. This panel will discuss best practices in first responder wellness while using experiences of officers lost to suicide to reinforce the message. This powerful program will encourage you to join the movement to change the way law enforcement addresses emotional wellness and supports the families in the aftermath. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\n\nParticipants will understand law enforcement suicide statistics and how they are used to change LE culture.\nParticipants will understand the impact stigma has on first responders and how to help change the narrative.\n Participants will be equipped to discuss mental health with first responders in an open and non-threatening manner.\n\n\nPresenter Biographies: Karen Solomon is the co-founder of Blue H.E.L.P. creator of www.1sthelp.net and the author of Hearts Beneath the Badge and The Price They Pay as well as many articles about law enforcement suicide. Her focus is the stories of the families who have lost an officer to suicide and the officers who suffer with the feeling that they have nowhere to turn. Karen was a member of the 2018 Officer Safety and Wellness Group Meeting\, the co-Chair of the Data and Research Committee of the National Consortium on Law Enforcement Suicide Prevention and is currently on the FBI task force to implement the Law Enforcement Suicide Data Collection Act. Karen is also the wife of a police officer. \nShaRonda Young Calderon is the widow of Deputy Homero Calderon\, an 18-year veteran with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department\, who died by suicide on June 29\, 2018. She has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Dallas Baptist University and currently pursuing advance studies in psychology. She and her husband started their career together in law enforcement with the Sheriff’s Department in 2000. She currently works as a legal assistant for a small law firm in Dallas\, Texas. ShaRonda has become an advocate for mental health and suicide awareness because she understands the difficulties living with and the stigma attached to it. \nAmanda Rae Button is a 33 year old mom to a spunky 3 year old. At just 30 years old\, two months after their daughter was born\, Amanda Rae found herself a widow due to PTSD that claimed her law enforcement husband\, Chris’s life. Now\, as she figures her way through life with suicide grief and being a new mom\, she tells her story. Her goal is to spread the less talked about awareness of what suicide\, specifically law enforcement suicide can do to those left behind.

Couple this with everyday factors that touch our lives\, and it is possible to lose our sense of purpose and drive. This course will focus on understanding the physiological and psychological effects of stress and job-related trauma on the body and identify tools that can increase long-term protective factors and optimize human performance under stress. \nIn this four-hour workshop co-facilitated by an experienced first responder and a first responder’s family member\, participants will engage in meaningful conversations about the stressful and often traumatic life of a first responder. Participants should expect to leave the workshop with a better understanding of how stress and trauma affect first responder performance and be equipped with techniques to build resilience and initiate difficult conversations. \nOutcomes \nPERFORMANCE  \n· Describe stress and differentiate between two types. \n· Recognize the effects of stress on performance. \nPERSISTENCE  \n· Initiate an #IWillListen / #IWillTalk conversation. \n· Identify at least five resources for officers in your agency. \nPREVENTION - A RANGE of Options \n· Explore resilience and healthy habits. \n· Employ a RANGE of five resilience skills. \nWho should attend: \nThis training is for all 1st responders\, police\, fire\, military/veterans\, corrections\, dispatchers\, chaplains\, retired 1st responders\, spouses\, professional staff\, clinicians\, and all who work in the public safety field. (Spouses and significant others are encouraged to register.) \nSpeakers: \nSteve Hough\, Chief Operating Officer \nSteven is a 20-year veteran of Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. During his time with the Sheriff’s Office Steven also spent seven years assigned as a Task Force Officer for the US Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force based in Pensacola\, FL. While serving a warrant with the task force Steven was shot numerous times\, including once in the face. As a result of his actions\, Steven was awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery\, United States Marshal’s Purple Heart\, and the Medal of Valor from Santa Rosa County. Steven has since retired from the Okaloosa county Sheriff’s Office and is currently working as an inspector with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. \n\n\nKaren Solomon\, Chief Financial Officer \nKaren is the creator of www.1sthelp.net and the author of Hearts Beneath the Badge and The Price They Pay as well as many articles about law enforcement suicide. SUMMARY:Resiliency: Bouncing Back to Where3?
DESCRIPTION:This will be a live interactive webinar presentation. If you are unable to attend the live webinar\, you will be able to view the recorded webinar for up to three days after\, but you must be registered to view the recorded version. \nPresented by 1st Responder Conferences. \nPresentation Title: Resiliency: Bouncing Back to Where3? (Please note: the “3” should be a superscript in the title\, as in “Where Cubed”) \nDescription of the Presentation: If Resiliency is about bouncing back\, where are first responders bouncing back to? Sarah will be speaking on the evolution of mental health awareness for first responders. She will address the importance of mental health awareness in the workplace. The presentation will discuss first responder resiliency and the idea of a “resiliency toolkit”. It will also look at the larger contexts where first responders exist. Sarah will address the importance of combining knowledge of individual resiliency with advocacy around larger positive contexts. This talk is valuable for anyone interested in general mental health awareness for themselves or as leaders in their respective communities. \nAbout the Speaker: Sarah works as an Advanced Care Paramedic on the Tactical Team with Peel Regional Paramedic Services. She has been a paramedic since 2008. Graduate of the University of Toronto\, she holds an Honours Science Degree\, Specialist in Paramedicine. In the early part of the Covid-19 pandemic\, Sarah joined her service’s High Risk Response Team. Time on that team reaffirmed her belief in the importance of mental health awareness for first responders. \nSarah first became aware of First Responder mental health concerns by writing a paper on paramedics and stress that won her a National Scholarship from the Tema Conter Memorial Trust. Sarah was a volunteer with that charity\, involved in first responder Mental Health awareness and advocacy\, from 2007 to 2018. Through her time with the charity\, she was trained in MANERS Psychological First Aid\, CISM\, and NOVA Crisis Intervention. She has spoken to college students\, colleagues\, and other first responders in both Canada and the USA on the basics of stress reactions\, stress management\, and resiliency. \nA current educator with her service and former educator for her local base hospital\, Sarah has also facilitated continuing medical education sessions. As an educator\, she has been trained to deliver the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Road to Mental Readiness (now The Working Mind First Responder) program. In 2016 PRPS was proud to be one of the first paramedic services in Canada to roll that program out to its entire staff. Sarah was excited for the opportunity to assist with the delivery of the program. Currently Sarah is part of the Core Team of people revamping the peer support program in her workplace. \nIn 2016 Sarah was honored to be a support volunteer for both the Heroes are Human Capital to Capital Ride and the Ontario Paramedic Ride. Over the years she has participated in several paramedic memorial rides on the East Coast of the USA and in various Canadian Provinces. To maintain her positive mental health Sarah tries to stay active in the community\, curls up with a good book\, or spends time in the great outdoors whenever possible. \n

SUMMARY:Speak No Evil: Reconciling Exposure to Trauma\, Threat and Tragedy Among First Responders
DESCRIPTION:This will be a live interactive webinar presentation. If you are unable to attend the live webinar\, you will be able to view the recorded webinar for up to three days after\, but you must be registered to view the recorded version. \nPresented by 1st Responder Conferences \nPresentation Title: Speak No Evil: Reconciling Exposure to Trauma\, Threat and Tragedy Among First Responders \nDescription of the Presentation: Those who work across the Thin Lines of public safety and service naturally don’t want to be on the receiving end of assistance – after all\, stoicism has a long history of being celebrated. But\, compassionate hearts can eventually bruise or suffocate enough to make public service feel like both a blessing and a curse. \nThis webinar will offer how to shift perspective\, where ‘symptoms’ are turned into adaptive responses and resistance is leveraged toward resilience and longevity. The presentation will discuss how to punch through multiple layers of stigma\, recognize the difference between traumatic stress\, moral injury\, and soul burden\, and make sense of the built up residue from exposure to mortality\, inhumanity\, and injustice. \nFirst responders will learn how to speak “of” cumulative stress\, without having to speak “about” things they’d rather forget. Because when we repack our baggage\, we regain mental and emotional bandwidth to live more easily with ourselves and our loved ones. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Tracy S. Hejmanowski is a licensed clinical psychologist\, with 20 years of clinical expertise working with service members\, first responders\, veterans\, and their families. Her work began in a VA Medical Center\, followed by an assignment working with repatriated Prisoners of War. She was stationed overseas and stateside as an active duty U.S. Navy psychologist\, followed by work as a DoD contractor for 11 years as the Program Manager of Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Deployment Health Center. \nFor the past 8 years\, Dr. Hejmanowski has provided program development and lead clinical facilitation for non-profit organizations that provide reintegration and recalibration retreats for veteran and first responder communities. She currently serves as a consultant for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Shield Program and is the Executive Director of the First Responder Project\, a nonprofit for first responders and their families. \nDr. Hejmanowski is a nationally requested speaker on trauma-related subjects for military and first responder communities. She has been a frequent presenter for Special Warfare Operations reintegration programs and has authored articles on operational stress. She was recognized for innovative behavioral health initiatives related to first responder trauma and was nationally recognized by the Center for Operational Stress Control with the Caregiver of the Year Award – the first time awarded to a civilian provider.
